Working through time

A short life story of our Workwise  Senior Associate, Jyotsna Roy, on purpose and use of technology ✍ 💻

From Ink to Algorithms: A Personal Technology Journey

Women have long been technology-friendly, adapting to tools that support their roles across generations. From the first sharpened stones and hand-carved farm implements to the humble yet transformative kitchen utensils that shaped domestic life, women have consistently embraced technology to ease burdens and enhance efficiency. This relationship extends beyond the household today, encompassing a rapidly changing world where communication, expression, and work are all mediated through sophisticated digital tools. In this evolving landscape, the capacity and willingness to unlearn, relearn, and upgrade knowledge and skills are crucial for staying relevant, efficient, and effective.

Born in an era when the sound of pencil scribbles and the fluid strokes of ink defined written expression, I first carved my thoughts onto paper with a steady hand. The pen, an extension of my thoughts, brought my ideas to life in the margins of notebooks, letters, and diaries.

As my professional world expanded, so did my tools. The clatter of typewriter keys soon replaced the silent sweep of pens, each keystroke echoing the urgency of the written word. With the arrival of cyclostyling, I found a way to share my work more broadly, even if it meant the laborious process of cutting stencils and inking drums.

Then came the sleek whirr of the photocopier, a machine that turned my solitary words into widespread messages. It transformed the way I shared my knowledge, bridging the gap between solitary writing and collective action.

The digital wave carried me further. Computers, with their infinite capacity for creation and connection, changed everything. My words became digital pulses, traversing the globe at the speed of light.

Today, my work extends into the ever-evolving landscapes of social media and artificial intelligence, where algorithms amplify my voice and bring my ideas to new audiences. From quiet ink to intelligent code, my journey reflects the ever-changing dance between humanity and technology.

Through this arc, my purpose has remained the same – to connect, share, and inspire – using whatever tools the times provide.
